7 Easy Tips to Drink More Water

7 Easy Tips to Drink More Water

Water is vital to our existence. After all, the human body is composed of about 60% of water!

It can be easy to underestimate how much water your body needs on a daily basis. When your water intake is less than your output, it can lead to dehydration and symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, dry skin, and fatigue.

While there is no official rule on how much water you should drink, it can help to set daily benchmarks for yourself. One easy calculation is to take your body weight, divide it by two, and add ounces to the end. For example, if you weigh 200 lb. you should drink 100 oz., or about 12.5 cups, of water per day.

Tackling hydration can be intimidating! With these easy tips and tricks, you’ll be on your way to better health in no time. Best of all? Drinking water will feel like a treat rather than a chore!

1. Keep it within reach

You’re more likely to drink water if it’s easily accessible. Keep a bottle of water on your work desk to make sure you are staying hydrated during the workday. Bring one with you when you get in the car so you won’t be thirsty while stuck in traffic. Keep one next to your bed to quench any mid-night dry mouth or to easily replenish when you wake up in the morning.

2. Add some flavor

Some people say that the biggest challenge in drinking more water is that it's, well, boring. Water doesn’t have a natural taste so it's easy to be enticed by its flavorful relatives, such as soda or juice. While there are many flavoring agents you can find to spice up your water, you can also opt for a natural flavor such as fruit or mint. By adding fresh fruit, vegetables, or herbs to your water, you can naturally turn it into whatever flavor you want!

Another easy way to jazz up your water is to freeze your favorite flavors into ice cubes. This is a particularly useful trick on hot days, as it will keep your drink cold in addition to adding a bit of zest.

Here are some tasty add-in ideas:

Fresh Fruit – Grapefruit, strawberry, lemon, raspberry, orange, kiwi, pineapple, lime, peach
Vegetable Slices – Cucumber, ginger, celery, carrot
Herbs – Basil, mint, lavender, lemongrass, sage, rosemary

3. Eat it!

Ok, that may be a bit misleading. You can’t necessarily eat your water, but you can eat water-rich foods! In addition to drinking more water, eating foods like cucumbers, celery, zucchini, watermelon, tomatoes, salad greens, broccoli, grapefruit, and baby carrots will help you naturally stay hydrated. It’s important to remember that eating these foods is not a replacement to drinking water, but rather something to do in addition to adding another glass of water to your day.

4. Dilute your favorite drinks

You don’t have to give up your favorite beverages in order to increase your H2O intake! If you are particularly in love with a juice, lemonade, or iced tea, simply water down your drinks a bit and add a healthy handful of ice. Your body will thank you for the extra water, while your taste buds will still get the tasty treat that they’re used to.

5. Swap still water for sparkling or seltzer

While nothing beats plain, old-fashioned water, sparkling drinks and seltzers are a great way to hydrate with a bit more taste and fizz. Seltzer water is simply water that has been carbonated, which means that a bottle or can of seltzer counts toward your daily hydration and is a bit more fun than non-carbonated water. Seltzer may also help curb your hunger without ruining your appetite, making it the perfect drink when your stomach is rumbling an hour before dinner!

6. A little friendly competition

Are you a competitive person? Use that to your advantage by challenging your equally competitive friends, family, or coworkers to a hydration challenge! Each day, participants set their daily hydration quota. Then, each person works to achieve their individual goal. Whoever successfully completes their goal the most days that month gets to pick the next lunch spot, while whoever reaches their goal the fewest days has to pay! Gamifying your water intake is a great way to have fun while getting a healthy dose of friendly competition.
