Guide To Fresh Citrus 2020

Squeeze the Day with Fresh Citrus

It's the season for citrus! From deliciously sweet to mouth-puckeringly sour, there are many varieties of flavor packed in citrus. Loaded with Vitamin C and plenty of other nutrients, they are super fruit that keep you healthy year-round!

With so many options, how do you decide? Here's a guide to all of the fresh citrus available in our Produce Department.

Clementine

It might be small, but don't let that fool you! The Clementine packs just as many nutrients as its larger siblings. It is quite easy to peel and very sweet, making it a perfect quick snack. Remember - good things come in small packages!

Minneola Oranges

Its distinct shape gave this orange the nickname, "Honeybell"! The Minneola is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, so the flavor is sweet but still a bit tart. With fewer seeds inside, it is easier to eat than the tangerine or the grapefruit -  perfect for picky eaters!

Cara Cara Navel Oranges

Can you say Insta-famous? Cara Cara Orange became popular on social media, since its pink color makes this fruit very photogenic! It is packed with vitamins and fiber, as well as the antioxidant Carotenoid Lycopene, which gives the Cara Cara its iconic pink blush.

Blood Oranges

Intense as its name, the Blood Orange has a distinctive color and taste that no one can mistake! Its deep red hue makes this orange a culinary favorite. It is a popular garnish for many recipes worldwide, and its sweet-yet-tart flavor makes it a perfect addition to a savory dish.

Mandarin Oranges

The Mandarin Orange is one of the easiest citruses to peel thanks to its thinner rind. With a light, sweet flavor, it makes a great addition to salads, savory dishes, and desserts - they're even delicious on their own!

Navel Oranges

The Navel Orange is the classic and most beloved orange! Its name comes from the opening at the blossom end of the fruit, which looks like a belly button. This seedless variety is very sweet and perfect for juicing, but also perfect for snacking!

Sumo Mandarin Oranges

How did this large orange get its name? It looks like a Sumo wrestler! The "bump" resembles the iconic top-knot bun worn by Sumo wrestlers. It is a very large mandarin orange that is exceptionally easy to peel. The Sumo Mandarin also has low acidity, making this one of the sweetest members in the citrus family. It is great for those who might be sensitive to citric acid.

Meyer Lemons

The Meyer Lemon is the go-to for a more fragrant and sweeter touch to your recipe. It is bright yellow and a bit smaller than your common lemon. When life gives you Meyer Lemons, don't stop at lemonade — try them in any recipe!

Key Limes

Key Lime Pie, anyone? The iconic fruit that made this pie famous, the Key Lime is loved by many for its versatility in the kitchen. It is fantastic with seafood and salad dressings, or as a finishing touch for Asian noodle dishes. The possibilities are endless!

Red Grapefruit & White Grapefruit

The Grapefruit looks nothing like grapes... until you see it on the tree. It gets its name from how it grows in grape-like bunches! It stands out in the citrus family as a super fruit.  Praised for many health benefits from improving blood pressure to promoting heart health, it even has cancer-fighting properties. So what is the difference between Red and White Grapefruit? Red Grapefruit has more Vitamin A and Lycopene, but aside from that, it really comes down to the taste. If you prefer a lighter taste, then the White Grapefruit is for you! If you want a fuller flavor, go for the Red Grapefruit!
